An ABA services work group comprising representatives of ABAI, the BACB, APBA, and Autism Speaks worked from 2015–2019 to develop a proposal to modify the Category III codes. Work group members assembled research evidence of the efficacy of ABA interventions, focusing on the following:
- Early intensive behavioral intervention for children with autism
- Treatment for severe problem behavior in children and adults with disabilities
- Treatment of tics and Tourette disorder with habit reversal
- Increasing social skills
Additionally, they met with behavior analysts and other stakeholders to discuss their experiences using the Category III codes, and sent a survey to more than 8,000 practitioners for further input on proposed changes to the temporary code set. This feedback was helpful in drafting a proposal for new and revised codes.
